Buying a MistAway System
Investing in a MistAway mosquito misting system means you are committing to a mosquito solution that will be effective for years to come.
Whether you are planning to work with a professional installer or considering a DIY approach, understanding the buying process and asking the right questions will help you get the most out of your investment.
Professional Mosquito Misting System Installation
The overwhelming majority of MistAway misting system owners rely on one of our authorized dealers to install and service their system. For most of our dealers, mosquito misting is a very complementary side venture to their main business – pest control, landscape and irrigation, decorative outdoor lighting, etc. Most of our systems are installed by dealers who install scores of systems each year. A few install hundreds.
They have been trained in the installation techniques that will yield a practically invisible, yet effective protective shield for your backyard and patio. And they have a thorough knowledge of our equipment and the range of available concentrates, along with direct access to our expertise. For most would-be owners, it just makes sense to rely on their experience to install and service the system.
Purchasing a mosquito misting system is similar to buying any other installed appliance with an ongoing service requirement. In addition to being routinely replenished with concentrate during the mosquito season, the misting unit and nozzle circuit must be periodically maintained, and in some climates, winterized.
The process begins with finding a prospective dealer and requesting a quote.
The best way to start is to type your zip code into our dealer locator. It will present a list of active dealers in your area, along with information that will help you decide who to contact – years of experience, the areas they serve, and whether they’ve completed our training program.
You should expect your prospective dealer to come out and inspect and measure your property and then present a written quote for both installation and service. If you have specific preferences or concerns, it will be helpful to tell your dealer about them in advance of him developing the quote.
- What area(s) do you want to protect? Just the back yard or do you want some nozzles protecting the front door as well?
- Are there areas you want to avoid treating, swing set or jungle gym for the kids, a backyard garden or koi pond?
- Are you interested in using Green/Minimum Risk concentrates rather than a conventional concentrate. (See this article.)
- Do you have a preference for the type of misting unit you want – Gen 1.3 drum unit or Gen 3 tanklesss unit?
- Are you interested in being able to monitor and control the system with the iMistAway app?
To make certain that you really understand what your prospective dealer is proposing, we recommend asking these clarifying questions about the important elements of the quote – the nozzle circuit, the misting unit, and the service plan:
Nozzle Circuit
- What is the planned nozzle circuit path? The ideal case is a perimeter around the area you want to protect.
- What is the length of the that path and how many nozzles does he plan to install? They should be positioned about every 10 feet.
- What is the mix of structure nozzles – on fences or eaves – and riser nozzles in landscaping? What type of landscaping riser has he proposed?
- If you are unclear how the nozzles will be installed, ask to see some photos from other installations.
- Is there anything tricky or difficult about the proposed installation?
Misting Unit
- What type of misting unit is being proposed, a Gen 1.3 drum or Gen 3 tankless unit? If a Gen 1.3 drum unit is proposed, what options is he proposing – agitation, leak detection, nozzle circuit filter?
- Where is the unit sited? Is there a GFCI outlet and is there access to water?
- Is iMistAway comprehended in the quote so you can monitor and manage the system with the iMist app?
Service Plan
- How frequently will be routine service visits to refill the system with concentrate and to make sure everything is functioning properly? FYI, an “average” 40 nozzle system, programmed for 3×45 second mists per day will require replenishment about every 60 days.
- Does the service plan comprehend winterization or a large annual maintenance event.
- How does the plan deal with component failures or other unplanned maintenance visits? Is there a warranty? Are these visits charged or are they included? Are replacements for clogged nozzles included?
- How is the service plan billed – with each service, monthly, or quarterly?
