The Gen 1.3 Drum Based Mosquito Misting System

Basic Drum Unit

Our Basic Drum unit is a simple, well-engineered model that serves as the platform for the entire Gen 1.3 product line.  That is, the Basic PLUS and Super Drum units offer additional features, but each has a Basic Drum unit at its core.

The Gen 1.3 pump and motor are capable of driving about 80 nozzles in single-zone mode and you can double its effective capacity by adding an optional zone kit.  It is controlled by our reliable proprietary digital controller, which allows the user to easily configure the mist schedule and other important system parameters.  These components are assembled onto an aluminum chassis that is mounted to the lid of a 55 gallon drum.  

For larger properties with more nozzles, the Gen 1.3 can be optionally mounted to a 125-gallon tank to extend the replenishment cycle.

The long range remote control is standard, as is the tough plastic shell and waterproof cover that protect the assembly from the elements.

The Gen 1.3 can also be “accessorized” with a nozzle circuit filter to reduce clogged nozzles and a wind sensor that will hold off a scheduled mist if the wind is above a preset threshold.

For example, you can use the app on your phone as a remote and you can remotely change the mist cycles and other controller parameters.  

But to get the full benefit of iMistAway, including accurate information and notifications as to how the unit is really working, you’ll need the additional instrumentation only available in the Super Drum unit.

Basic PLUS Drum Unit

For MistAway’s Basic PLUS Drum unit, we start with our Basic unit and add components and controls that provide additional features that make the system more effective, flexible and require less maintenance.

Agitation 

Agitating the drum contents prior to each scheduled misting cycle inhibits biological growth that can occur in a drum that sits outside underneath the hot sun.  

These semi-solids would otherwise get pulled into the pump and then pushed down the nozzle circuit, fouling the nozzles.  

Agitation also provides for effective use of natural mosquito misting concentrates that are based on essential plant oils.  

These formulations are difficult to emulsify and when mixed with water, they tend to separate in the drum, with the oil in the formulation rising to the top.  

These natural formulations can only be effectively applied if there is thorough agitation just prior to the mist cycle.

Managing End-of-Cycle Pressure and Line Fill 

The Basic PLUS unit can be calibrated so that at the end of a mist cycle, it allows a precise volume of fluid to flow back into the drum.  

This allows for rapid depressurization of the nozzle circuit so that the nozzles close quickly and they don’t stream or drip.  And importantly, it also means that at the beginning of the next mist cycle there is no delay in misting while the pump fills the nozzle circuit.

Preventing Siphons

With a cut in the nozzle circuit below the level of liquid, it is possible for a leak to empty the contents of a 55 gallon drum in about 12 hours. The additional components and controls in our Basic PLUS unit prevent that by isolating the nozzle circuit from the drum contents between mist cycles.

Super Drum Unit

In addition to all the features of the Basic PLUS unit, MistAway’s Super Drum has additional valuable features that set the bar for how a mosquito misting system should operate.

Measuring Flow Rate

Consistently good flow through the nozzles is the key to an effective mosquito spray system.  

Fouled nozzles, a failing pump, or a faulty power outlet can all compromise the effectiveness of your system.  

The Super Drum unit contains a flow meter that measures the flow of each mist cycle and can alert you if the system isn’t misting or if the flow rate is too low or too high.

Recognizing Leaks

At the end of a mist cycle, the Super Drum compares the flow out of the unit to a target flow based on a nozzle count and target flow rate.  If the measured flow exceeds the target flow, the unit shuts down and announces an error.

Measuring Remaining Level

In the Basic and Basic PLUS units, the volume remaining in the drum, and whether it is empty, is a calculation based on factors programmed into the controller.  

In the Super Drum unit, the estimate is much more precise because it is based on actual measurement of the flow out of the unit in each mist cycle.  

The Super Drum also offers confirmation when the drum is empty.

Health Monitoring with iMistAway
